Welcome to the French American Center...
I had made up my mind to go to France for the summer, after years of studying French, I knew that the only way I would ever really learn was to go there and be forced to speak it. I was attracted to the South, as like most youth, the beach and sun are summer necessities, and on a recommendation of a friend, I chose Montpellier, as a small but lively city with tons of other students. Originally I had thought to enter into a language program at either a university or language school, but after a tenuous search online, I was astounded and highly disappointed at the summer prices for such a program. I am, after all, a student, i.e. I run on very little money. But determined, I kept up my search for another option. And I found it in the French-American Center. A program that would match me with a family; where I would work part time as an au pair, in exchange for free room and board, a weekly stipend, and several hours of intensive language classes at the French-American Center each week - not to mention the perfect opportunity to practice my French. Needless to say, I jumped at the idea and applied.
Nervous to live with a family for two months, whom I had never met, I flew over to France. What I entered into was a whole new world and life for me. And I can only say lovely things about it. I found the exact family I had hoped for, one who loved their children, and loved being a family. I found parents who were set upon making my two month sojourn a wonderful time. While caring for a thirteen year-old and a six month old baby may seem a bit of a daunting task, they were both absolutely great with me. I found a very polite and enthusiastic little friend in the thirteen year-old, and the most smiley of babies you could ask for. I highly recommend this program.
