Here at the French American Centre we are concerned with trying to find solutions to the problems of sustainable development; which is why we present to you the very latest in environmentally sound shopping, it won’t be around for long and is very ‘en vogue’ on the other side of the channel…It’s the Swap Shop!
ASwap Shop is an event where people bring along those things that they no longer use, or need, and swap them with someone else for something more interesting or useful of the same value. This exchange is an organised form of recycling: You arrive with things you don’t use and leave with something new and useful to you! The Swap Shop epitomises the expression: “one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure!” or in french: “La poubelle d’un home est le trésor d’un autre!”
The Swap Shop has three main steps:
On Friday 10th January 2013 at 19h00 the French American Centre will be transformed into a Swap Shop for your greatest pleasure!
If you are interested by this type of initiative, The French American Centre invites you to discover the Freecycle network which offers and (retrieves) furniture for free in cities where there are members. The aim of the Swap Shop and of Freecycling is to take old, unused, unwanted things and to give them away to someone who can see the potential in them. In a similar vein, the French American Center recommends “Upcycling”. “Upcycling” is a little known concept in France, the idea is that you take an item of furniture that might look like rubbish to you, but with a bit of TLC or a lick of paint this ‘rubbish’ could be given a new lease of life!
