Welcome to the French American Center...

After graduating from college, I decided I wanted to live abroad for a year and study French. I knew that learning French in school and college would never amount to anything unless I went to the place where it was actually spoken. Instead of opting for Paris, as many people do, I thought the south of France would be my best bet since I love sun and the beach. During my online search, I discovered the French-American Center's Au Pair in Montpellier program and knew that it was the right choice for me. After all, living with a French family would be the best way to discover a new language and country.

The French-American Center found me a host family, whom I stayed with for 7 months in the wine region of Montpellier. It was beautiful and the family was really great to me. While living in the South of France, I also met many new people and friends, both French and Anglophone- including other English-speaking au pair like myself. Montpellier is a university town, so finding fun in the city wasn't hard at all.

My French improved as well, not only because I lived with a French family who was very patient with me, but also because the French American Center helped me find plenty of language partners who would meet me for coffee, lunch or even dinner and converse with me in French, all in exchange for me helping them with their English (how easy is that?).

I enjoyed living in France and learning French as much as I enjoyed sharing my language and culture with others and meeting people from all over the world. I would urge anyone who wants to experience France like a local to try this program.
