In general the French (usually those who haven't actually tasted it) give British cuisine a bad wrap. Well, I can tell you, as a British girl in France I find myself craving for some home cooked British food - you can't beat it. So, sit back and let me tell you a bit about it.
What's a typical English breakfast?
Most people around the world seem to think the typical English breakfast consists of eggs, bacon, sausages, etc. all washed down with a cup of milky tea. Nowadays, however, a typical English breakfast is more likely to be a bowl of cereal, a slice of toast, orange juice and a cup of coffee. A traditional English breakfast or the Full English consists of eggs, bacon, sausages, fried bread, mushrooms and baked beans. Even though not many people will eat this for breakfast today, it is always served in hotels and guest houses around Britain for the tourists!
What is a typical English lunch?
In general lunch is a small quick meal which is eaten at your desk or in your workplace as lunch hours are only for one hour. Some French maybe disgusted by this idea - no skiving off for two hours drinking rosé! Many children at school and adults at work will have a 'packed lunch'. This typically consists of a sandwich, a packet of crisps, a piece of fruit and a drink.
What is a typical English Dinner?
A typical British meal for dinner is meat and "two veg.". Gravy covers the meat, and one of the vegetables is almost always potato. However, this meal is rarely eaten nowadays, I read a recent survey that found that the most popular cuisine in Britain is curry! Rice or pasta are now favoured as the 'British Dinner'. Sunday lunchtime is a typical time to eat the traditional Sunday Roast consisting of roast meat (usually beef), two vegetables and potatoes with Yorkshire Puddings. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!
So, the next time you don't know what to cook, try some British cuisine - don't knock it before you try it!
